Hallstatt : World Heritage Site Upper Austria

Hallstatt - World Heritage Site

In December 1997 the Hallstatt – Dachstein Salzkammergut region was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The inclusion of this unique region in UNESCO's exclusive list is a special and indeed global honour. The World Heritage Committee explained its decision as follows: "The Hallstatt - Dachstein - Salzkammergut region is an exceptional example of an unspoilt landscape of unique beauty and special scientific importance, and one that also harbours evidence of early and ongoing human, commercial and cultural activity. This cultural landscape combines nature and culture in a harmonious and complimentary manner."

The 4 aspects - natural and cultural - combined into one:

Natural heritage

The natural landscape of the Dachstein region, with its characteristic cave system, karst phenomena, and rich salt deposits are the factors that create a close relationship between the natural and cultural heritage.

The cultural-historic heritage

The cultural historic heritage in its widest sense encompasses the forest cultivation methods dictated by the salt deposits that have clearly marked the landscape.

The architectural heritage

Buildings from the Gothic, baroque, and historicist periods characterise the appearance of the Salzkammergut to this day.

The archaeological heritage

Hallstatt salt mine is the oldest operational mine in the world. The rich, archaeological finds from the early ice age found in this region have resulted in an entire cultural epoch (800 to 400 BC) being named the Hallstatt period.

Museum:

A unique history in an impressive landscape - this essentially sums up the World Heritage Site of Hallstatt. A journey through time from its origins to the present with a special focus on mining, the world-famous burial ground, and most importantly Hallstatt Culture (800 - 400 BC).
