Salzwelten (Salt Worlds)
Altaussee - Hallstatt
During Roman times Hallstatt was one of the most important settlements in the world. The reason was simple - salt. A visit to the Salzwelt Hallstatt leads you to Hallstatt's roots as the location of the world's oldest salt mine. The Salzwelt Hallstatt looks back at 3000 years of turbulent history.
From the world-famous burial ground to the discovery sites in the salt mine - go on a journey back in time and take part in the history of the legendary "Man in Salt".
UNESCO has designated the Hallstatt-Dachstein region as a "World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site". This special honour is in reflection of its 7000-year-old history as a salt producer. Salt is still produced in Hallstatt today, and during your tour around Salzwelten you can both see it and taste it. From the "World Heritage View", you can enjoy the amazing view of the lakeside town of Hallstatt, the Dachstein and naturally the Salzberg.

Centuries of salt mining have similarly left their mark on the Ausseerland, a landscape forever immortalized by world-famous Austrian artists in pictures, words and music.
Today the Altaussee salt mine is Austria's largest operational mine to be open to visitors.
